Graduate Programs in Classics

In collaboration with the School of Arts and Humanities, the Centre organises an MA and a PhD degree in Classics, which allow students to iniciate their research career in different areas of study. Students can apply for the Erasmus+ program and spend a period in one of our partner Universities.

Master Degree in Classics

Students are introduced to academic research in Classics and/or Reception of Classical Literature and Culture.

2 on Problems in Classics
3 on ‘Topics in Classics’
1 elective seminar
Preparation of an original dissertation under the guidance of a supervisor.

Admission requirements

A 2nd cycle degree in Classics (=2 years of studies/120 ECTS), preferably.

Proficiency in Latin and /or Greek.

3

Proficiency in Portuguese and in two other languages is expected.

Students with a training in Classics willing to expand their knowledge and perspectives of analysis or interested in moving to a Doctorate.

Students from other areas of study willing to learn and develop academic research on different themes of the classical world (classical languages, literature and culture, reception, or others) or interested in moving to a Doctorate.

How to Apply?

Applications are permanently open. Students can start their Master in September or in January. Admission results are notified twice a year.

Special attention should be given to the Motivation letter (see below in ‘what we value’)

The diploma is coordinated by Departamento de Estudos Clássicos from Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa

We strongly value candidates who:

  • Show a strong academic record and a solid interest in Classics.
  • Briefly outline the theme and main aspects to be developed in the research.
  • Want to study a topic that fits the strategy of the existing teams of the CEC

PhD Degree in Classics

The PhD in Classics is entirely dedicated to independent academic research leading to groundbreaking results.

Proficiency in Portuguese and in two other languages is expected.

Students who wish to consolidate their research skills and to produce innovative research.

Admission results are promulgated twice a year in April and November

We strongly value candidates who:

  • Provisionally indicate the research team of the Centre in which they intend to be integrated;
  • Identify (also provisionally) the topic they would like to study, including a brief description of the state of the art and a brief list of sources and relevant bibliography;
  • Explain the pertinence of what they intend to do;
  • Attach a provisional schedule.
