Ioannis Petropoulos é um Helenista. Estudou em particular Hesíodo, Homero, a lírica grega e a poesia popular antiga, bem como a relação entre as tradições cristã e erudita (pagã). Actualmente, dedica-se ao estudo de São Basílio (IV d. C.).
Ioannis Petropoulos é Director Emérito do Centre for Hellenic Studies-Harvard na Grécia e Professor Jubilado de Literatura Grega Antiga da Democritus University of Thrace.
