Introduction to Classical Reception Theory and Practice
Session lectured in English
In this introductory class on classical reception, Claire and Marianna will demonstrate how insights from reception theory have been applied to classical reception studies and encourage you to think about your own fields of application for it outside of the afterlives of the classical world. We will start with some historical context for the theoretical basis of reception studies, and discuss the relevance of the field in terms of contemporary debate around culture and inclusion. To round up the class, we will give you an idea of what’s currently happening in reception studies by introducing you to our own doctoral projects, situating them in current debates in the discipline. The next part of the class will be more interactive, as we invite students to select among the texts and images we have brought along to consider how these might operate in a reception context.
