Epigraphy in Motion: Cyriac of Ancona and his Lost Commentaries

This lecture will explore the extraordinary contribution of the Italian humanist Cyriac of Ancona to the early documentation of the ancient Mediterranean. Merchant, diplomat and traveller, Cyriac recorded hundreds of inscriptions and monuments in his Commentaria, an extraordinary handwritten set of diaries which are now largely lost. By retracing the fragmented transmission of these manuscripts and reassessing the surviving evidence, the lecture will show how Cyriac’s direct engagement with ancient artefacts, his drawings and his transcriptions shaped an innovative and dynamic approach to antiquity. It will also highlight how his work invites us to rethink epigraphy as the study of the lifecycle of inscriptions from their ancient contexts to their modern reuses.
