Summary:
“The sisters of Meleager and their paradoxical mourning”
The myth of Meleager culminates in the killing of the Calydonian boar by Atalanta, and in the conflict between the hero and his maternal uncles over the claim to the prize. The brothers of Althaea, the hero’s mother, kill her nephew, causing grief and consternation among all the hunt participants. The hero’s sisters, the Meleagrides, in particular, abandon themselves to an immoderate, uncontrollable mourning, so much so that the goddess Artemis, to stop them, transforms them into pharaoh hens (pintadas). During the seminar, we will highlight the network of family relationships underlying the construction of the myth and, in particular, the meaning of the metamorphosis undergone by the Meleagrides.
