I work as principal researcher working on my individual project funded by FCT and I am a member of the Centre for Classical Studies of the University of Lisbon, School of Arts and Humanities. I received Master’s degree in History and PhD in Classics (Latin) at the University of Helsinki. In my research project “The Uses of Barbarians: Roman Host Society and Encountering Migrants in 300–500” (BarbUse), I analyse the late Roman ambiguities from the fourth to sixth centuries in encountering newcomers and coping with groups that were considered alien (‘barbarians’) to Roman society. I examine the various ways and levels in which the migrants were used in the internal Roman power struggles. I also write a blog on ancient history and classical culture (in English and in Finnish).

Interests: Late Antiquity; migration and mobility in the ancient Mediterranean world; Graeco-Roman religions; late Roman history; Christianization of the Roman Empire.
